I met up with one of my friends today for lunch and the topic of prepping came up, I couldn't help but chuckle and he gave me the "oh nooo you're one of THEM!" look. I couldn't help but get into a friendly disagreement with him because over all, I know he's just teasing me about it and could care less what I do with my spare time.
None the less, He believes everything will work itself out and its all a media based scare tactics.
This is where I had to lay out some statistics on him about unemployment rate, increasing food and gas prices, even changing weather.
Eventually our conversation drifted over to Fema camps, martial law and chem trails which seemed to peak his interests more than economical collapse. When i got home and sent him some youtube videos like What in the world are they spraying and Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura FEMA CAMP He replied to me with "Oh Crap, How can things like this happen in the U.S?"
I'm expecting his next email to be full of questions on how to prep.
My point is, One by one we can bring so much awareness to what is going on by just having a simple conversation, and sharing the facts that are out there.
It's probably the only way to get things to change before they totally fall apart.
If enough of us stand up for our freedoms at the same time, we could change the game.
SHTF plan and preppers survival....with MelloPrepper
You don't have to believe in the end of the world (teotwawki) to be a prepper. Things happen everyday with nature, economy, and food supply. I'm here to talk about the ways I'm preparing, share my opinions and hopefully pass on some helpful information.

Preparedness (prepping) on a broke budget
Sometimes you just have to stop and think about what you will really need and stop worrying about all the expensive stuff other preppers have. That's my thought on it anyway.
Food, water, shelter, medical, protection, clothing, gold, silver, land, the list goes on forever and not everyone (myself included) has cash for all that. Here are a few ideas on ways to come up with extra cash or cheap supplies (feel free to add to the list with your comments!)
My first tip.
Make every purchase meaningful. Will you really use that item or do you need it just in case?
Put the "just in case" on a separate list for now and get to it once you have the basics started before you wind up with a house full of stuff that wont necessarily help you survive.
This might not be for everyone, But what about metal detecting in your spare time?
You can find old metal detectors for pretty cheap to start with. It might not look fancy and new, but if it detects stuff that you can re-sell then its doing the job. You can find new and old coins, jewelry, gold, silver, relics, scrap metal. all worth money.
Speaking of scrap metal, Do you crush and save all your soda cans? pile them up and cash em in!
Take a look around on garbage night for brass, copper, aluminum, rolls of wire, BBQ grill housings, there are tons of things you can take to the scrap yard and get paid per pound. See if there is a used appliance store around your area. They will often pay $50 and up for old stoves, washers, dryers etc because they repair them for re-sale. Garbage night is a great way to make cash. Check your local laws first before taking curb side treasures.
Yard sales and thrift shops are and endless cache for prepping supplies,
My last yard sale score was 3 shoe boxes of bandages, alcohol wipes, tonge depressors (great finger splints btw) sterile gauze, and tape for $3.00. And a Colman folding propane camping stove for $4.00.
I have found pill bottles and piggy banks with old silver coins, Cheap items to list on ebay and plenty of other items for prepping that would have cost me way more had i bought them in the store.
Have your own yard sale. Take the cash from that and use it for supplies.
The dollar store is a great place to start putting together your stock of medical stuff. I go to the dollar tree and they carry a pretty decent selection like ointments, creams, eye care, burn spray, scar gel, sprain wraps, pill cutters, vitamins, asprin, peroxide, antiseptic, etc. Dollartree has online shopping now but most items come in bundle packs of 2 or more.
Shop off season.
Most Wal-marts K-marts, Targets etc will start to clear out their spring and summer seeds, camping and gardening items by September to make room for the holiday stuff. Always check those clearance isles!
Select a few chosen people to prep with you. It would be your new SHTF family so choose wisely.
You could combine preps or purchase land together as a group.
Did you know:
1) you can purchase vegetable and herb seeds with your EBT / Food stamp card?
2) Most stores that accept coupons allow you to use 1 manufacturer coupon and one store coupon for the same item? Example: Yummy bread is $3.00 you have a coupon for 50c off from the Sunday paper but you also have $1.00 from the stores weekly flyer. use both on the Yummy bread and now its $1.50.
If your lucky enough to live in an area where the stores double manufacturer coupons, That Yummy bread would olny be $1.00 ! Double coupons alone can save you thousands of dollars a year. AND help add food to your stockpile.

Options for prepping and storing food? (3 of 3)
In addition to storing MRE's, canned food, supermarket food or dehydrated foods,
you could also store away 5 gallon buckets of dry wheat, grains, rice, beans, quinoa and a ton of other dry foods. A few words of caution on this.
Plastic buckets are permeable to oxygen. Because of this, you will lose nutritional value, absorb odors from the surrounding area.
Rats can and will chew threw these buckets.
Do not store the buckets directly on concrete (find and old wooden palate) Storing the buckets directly on the floor could make them brittle over time, wick more air and moisture inside and over all deteriorate your investment. Keeping them off the floor in general will help keep temperatures around the buckets nice and even.
There are a few companies who sell oxygen absorbers and mylar bags to help you keep the moisture out of your dry foods. Don't forget to label and date each one you pack. It helps to do this in 2 locations of each bucket in case one date gets rubbed off or damaged. Plus is can save you the hassle of having to turn each heavy bucket around and around looking for the info. You might have a grain mill right in your town where you could purchase buckets already full and ready to hoard.

Options for prepping and storing food?.(Part 2 of 3)
MRE's or Meals ready to eat are packages of food that can be opened and eaten hot or cold, with no additional fussing around. you have military grade and civilian grade. Military grade comes with a flame less heater and are not sold by the Gov.
You can find them second hand on auction sites, army surplus shops or a friend/relative that is active in the military. When buying these, try to find out how and where they were stored and for how long. High temperatures (above 80) can cause them to go bad faster. Check the expiration date on both the individual meal packages AND the box/case they come in. Since purchasing these second hand, you want to make sure no one switched or changed whats in the box.
Now civilian MRE's are not much different besides being made for the general public and not all contain the heater. most places sell them separately.
There is a wide market out there with some pretty incredible choices from freeze dried ice cream to stews and sandwiches. so shopping around in a must.
Here are a few of my favorite places to purchase from (and compare)
Nitro-Pak they offer free and flat rate shipping options based on what you buy. That alone saves money.
The food taste good, they offer tons of choices and customer service is no hassle.
Now.. This next place is my food prepping haven! its Cheap, fast, and easy food from eFoodsDirect.com!
No trans fats, no hydrogenated oils, no added msg, NOT genetically modified, gluten and lactose free, natural made in the USA and the list goes on. You could stock a bunker or your car and still walk away knowing you got one of the best deals out there. For the price of the postage, you can get 6 free meals so you can try them out.
That's how i got hooked. I was expecting some flour tasting weird textured food but
it was damn good. I really like to avoid gluten so that was a bonus.
Sit down with your family and figure a few things out.
Do you plan on having 3 or more meals a day?
Are you going to buy desserts and extras?
How much variety do you really need?
Will you need food to give away or trade?
Will you need food for more then one location?
How long do you expect to feed your family? 3 months? longer then a year?
Are you basing your food stock on prepped foods alone or will you be gardening as well?
What if garden fails?
